My Journey to Organic Skincare

Let’s just put it this way, I don’t remember a time when I haven’t battled acne.  I mean, surely I didn’t deal with this problem in the 1st grade, right?  The point is, this has been a battle for me for a long time.  And not only is it the acne itself, but it leaves behind all kinds of scarring that causes it’s own insecurities, even when my face is clear.  I have tried every topical and ingestible medicine that they have come out with.  Sure, some things have worked for a while, but then they don’t, and I am back on the hunt.

A couple of years ago, I just started to accept that I may never find the perfect skincare regiment and that I would just have to live with this for the rest of my life.  Then I learned that 60% of everything that we put on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream.  What?  So I thought about all of the products that I had plastered on my face and all of the pills that I had swallowed just trying to fix the problem.  I had literally spent decades using all sorts of toxic chemicals on my skin and in my body.  Scary.

This new knowledge opened my eyes and sent me on a search for the perfect non-toxic skincare.  This wasn’t an easy task, to say the least.  With all of the greenwashing out there, you just can’t trust that a product is “all-natural”, or even “organic”.  Since skincare products in the US are not regulated by the FDA, companies can put almost anything in their products, and then throw these words on the bottles to make consumers believe that they are safe.  But, I did the best I could to read labels and look for products that truly were non-toxinc and safe.

About that time, I had the privilege of meeting another mom in my son’s homeschool group, and she introduced me to NYR Organic.  She is a two time cancer survivor, and because of previous cancer treatments, she really has to be careful what she puts on her skin.  After hearing her story and about the extensive research that she had done in this area,  I couldn’t wait to try it myself.

I quickly fell in love with the products.  And the more I learned about this 30 year old, family-owned company, the more I loved them.  This information was taken from their website…

“In 1981, Neal’s Yard Remedies started life in a small depot in central London, driven by the passionate belief that health and beauty should be more natural and less synthetic.  In 2014, now we are one of the top organic skincare companies in the UK, Japan and Dubai, with direct selling channels in the UK and US.  We follow the Precautionary Principle when formulating our products, which means if we’re not completely satisfied an ingredient is safe for you and the environment, we won’t use it.  It’s that simple.”
