This is one of my new favorite morning rituals!  Not only do I enjoy reaping all of the benefits to my health, but I really enjoy the taste and the energy boost!  Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Health Benefits

  • Hydration – Water, first thing in the morning, gives our body the hydration it needs after a long night of sleep. This is a great substitution for coffee, which is a diuretic and actually aids in the dehydration of our body.
  • Detoxification – Lemon and cayenne pepper are both super stimulants to the liver, our main detoxifying organ.  They help to stimulate the liver’s natural enzymes and rid the body of harmful toxins.
  • Immune System Boost - Lemon, cayenne pepper and raw honey are all antibacterial and anti-fungal.  Raw honey, especially that which as been produced locally, will help protect the body against seasonal allergies and cold symptoms, such as coughing and throat irritations.  Lemons, although acidic, actually help to neutralize the body’s pH by making it more alkaline.  pH imbalance has been linked to numerous disorders and chronic illnesses.
  • Energy – Cayenne pepper increases the temperature of your body and kick-starts your metabolism, aiding in weight loss.  Lemons are also packed with electrolytes, including potassium, calcium and magnesium.

Warm Lemon Water with Cayenne Pepper and Honey

Ingredients:

  • Water
  • Lemon
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Local, Raw Honey

Recipe:

I use my tea kettle to warm about 12 ounces of water, no warmer than 100° F.  You don’t want to get the water too hot or it will deplete all of the nutrients in the other ingredients.  Once the water is warm, fill a mug.  Squeeze in the juice of 1 small lemon or 1/2 of a large lemon.  Add 1 teaspoon of honey and sprinkle on a thin layer of cayenne pepper.  Stir to mix and drink.

Note:  It is best to drink this with a metal or glass straw to protect your teeth enamel from the acidity of the lemon.
